About Sonya Walker

Sonya Walker Welcome to my page and this is my artwork....

Sonya Walker was born and raised in Savannah, Ga. At a very young age, she demonstrated a keen interested in drawing. As a very quiet and shy child, she used drawing as a way of occupying her time. In high school, one of her instructors encouraged her to pursue her art education in a newly established school in town called the Savannah College of Art & Design (S.C.A.D.), which he wrote a letter of recommendation for her to attend. Sonya went on to major in Illustration. After a year of study, Sonya decided to withdraw and pursue her art interests.

In 1989, Sonya became an Associate Artist with J.P. Art Enterprise on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina under the direction of Joe Pinckney, a local Artist and entrepreneur. While at J.P. Art Enterprise, Sonya participated in several art exhibitions, including in: Valdosta, GA., The People's Theatre Gallery in Milwaukee, WI., the Gullah Festival in Beaufort, SC. and many more.

Shortly after, Sonya found new direction with her work when she joined with two local artists, Napoleon Wilkerson and Ogbonna Mossi. Together they formed the collaborative called "Creative Mind Images". The three came together to express a common interest through the medium of art. Motivated by issues that affected the African American community, the threesome figured that there were power in numbers. They realized that images influenced people's thinking, so they decided to use that influence to address various issues that impacted the community through their work.
